Grantham Have to Appoint Taylor as Caretaker 07/10/2008
In a surprise move on Monday, UniBond League Division 1 South Grantham Town Chairman Roger Booth was informed by Caretaker Manager Mick Hogg that he no longer wanted that role with the Gingerbreads. After a good training session on Tuesday night, Mr Booth confirmed that Tony Taylor will now be taking charge of first team affairs for the short term future.
“Mick rang me yesterday to tell me of his decision,” said Roger Booth. “I was very surprised when he said he no longer wanted the position due to the club talking to other managers about the position. I cannot see what else he expected us to do at the present time!”
Hogg took charge of a spirited performance for Grantham at Clitheroe on Saturday. Ultimately, his team lost 4-1, but for over an hour gave the UniBond League Division 1 high flyers a good run for their money. It was expected that Hogg would remain as Caretaker while Grantham assessed candidates for the post, including Hogg himself.
Roger Booth outlined how the Board of Directors are going to go about filling the post. “I asked Tony to take charge in the short term while we advertise the position, which he is happy to do. The reaction from the playing squad has been terrific.” He added. “Terry Fleming was back at training on Tuesday to make it a full squad bar one that have stayed. That is very encouraging for Tony and the club.”
Roger Booth has confirmed that the club are willing to take their time to appoint the right person. With the post being formally advertised, Taylor could find himself in charge for the best part of a month.
“We have already had a number of applications arrive at the club,” Roger Booth commented, “But want to give people the best chance to apply. By advertising, it takes the pressure off us to appoint quickly and gives people time to mull it over before writing to us. We have already spoken to a couple of people about the job, but no decisions have been made and none will be until we have had all the applications in and spoken to more people. We must make sure that we make the right appointment for the future of this club.”
